It was claimed by the Spanish in the late 1400s and for the Netherlands in 1634. Most of the Curacao attractions demonstrate some part of that heritage. The area was a big part of the Dutch trade industry, as well as a part of the slave trade and a chief port for many of the pirates of the day. Tourists can even dive in their feeding tanks and feed some of the sharks and turtles for a fee of $54.
